How to Make a Simple Silicone Mold Part 1

How to Work with TAP Silicone RTV System: A Step-by-Step Guide - Part 1 (Click here to see Part 2.)

The TAP Silicone RTV System is a versatile mold-making solution that allows you to create high-quality molds with intricate details. This guide will walk you through the essentials of measuring, mixing, and preparing the silicone and hardener for a successful mold.

Understanding the TAP Silicone RTV System Components

The system includes several components sold separately, allowing you to customize your mold-making process:

  • Silicone Base: An off-white viscous liquid capable of capturing fine details.

  • Hardener: Dyed blue for easy mixing; ensures a streak-free blend.

  • Thixotropic Thickener: Used to make blanket molds.

  • Thinner: Reduces viscosity and extends mold life.

This guide focuses on using the silicone base and hardener for creating a simple mold.

Step 1: Prepare the Mold Container

Before mixing the silicone, you need a container to hold the mold material. You can use a paper cup or create a custom mold box. If you're unsure how to construct a mold box, refer to TAP Plastics’ instructional video on the topic.

Step 2: Measure the Required Silicone Volume

To avoid waste or shortages, accurately measure the amount of silicone needed. Use rice as a simple method:

  1. Fill the mold container with rice.

  2. Transfer the rice to a measuring cup.

  3. Note the volume—this is the amount of silicone required.

Alternatively, you could use water, but drying time would be required before pouring the silicone.

Step 3: Measuring the Hardener

There are two methods to measure the hardener accurately: by weight or by volume.

Measuring by Weight (Most Accurate Method)

  1. Use a digital scale: A simple electronic postage scale works well.

  2. Tare the scale: Place an empty cup on the scale and set it to zero.

  3. Weigh the silicone: Pour the required amount of silicone into the cup.

  4. Calculate the required hardener: The mixing ratio is 10:1 by weight.

    • Example: If you have 225g of silicone, you need 23g of hardener.

  5. Weigh the hardener separately using another empty cup.

Measuring by Volume

  1. Use a measuring container with milliliter (ml) markings.

  2. Determine the ratio: The mix ratio by volume is 9:1.

    • Example: If you have 200ml of silicone, divide by 9 to get 22ml of hardener.

  3. Use a graduated syringe to measure small amounts of hardener accurately.

Once the hardener is measured, it is ready to be mixed into the silicone.

Next Steps: Mixing and Pouring

Now that you have the correct measurements, the next step is ensuring a bubble-free mix and proper pouring technique. Part two of this guide will cover mixing and pouring methods to achieve a flawless mold.
