Acrylic Buffing Compounds

Buffing Compound for Acrylic & Plastics

Bring dull, scratched, or hazy acrylic back to a crystal-clear shine with TAP Plastics’ Tripoli-based buffing compounds. Designed specifically for plastics, these tallow-lubricated bars provide the cutting and polishing power you need for professional results.

How It Works:
After cutting acrylic, you’ll want to sand the edges with wet/dry sandpaper (e.g., 400 grit) to remove saw marks. Once the surface is smooth, apply TAP buffing compound to a cotton buffing wheel and polish the edge. The compound provides controlled abrasion, gradually removing fine scratches, haze, and opacity. Always keep the piece moving against the wheel to prevent heat buildup, which can melt acrylic.

Product Options:

  • Red Compound (2 ¼ lbs / Half-bar option): Coarser formula for initial polishing, scratch removal, and restoring clarity after sanding.

  • White Compound (2 ½ lbs / Half-bar option): Fine finishing polish for a brilliant, glass-like edge.

Tips for Best Results:

  • Sand edges with water before buffing to prevent clogging and improve finish.

  • Use separate buffing wheels for red and white compounds.

  • Avoid pressing corners directly into the buffing wheel to prevent grabbing.

  • Keep the acrylic moving steadily to prevent heat buildup.

Applications:

  • Polishing saw-cut acrylic edges

  • Restoring hazy or scratched surfaces

  • Display cubes, awards, signage, and custom acrylic projects

Whether you’re a professional fabricator or a DIY hobbyist, TAP Plastics buffing compounds are an essential step to achieve a smooth, crystal-clear finish on acrylic and other plastics.
